Rock Carvings
Mudjina and Newman
Mudjina Gorge has a lovely free camp at the top.Mt Whaleback is the Mt they are mining at Newman, we did a tour here, its the largest open cut iron ore mine in the world. They dispose ore below 50%, usually 68%. In Russia they only have & use 50% ore. The iron ore in nature is very pretty, I like the deep blue. It is often in bands. The mines are encroaching on Karajini NP.
wittenoom
Wittenoom is an abandoned asbestos mining town. Residents (except 1) were removed from the town. The asbestos was mined from the lovely gorge 5klms away. The dust from miling it was lethal . We drove up the Gorge now a neglected part of Karajini. The NP used to have campsites and some visitors still camp up there. The NP does not advise anyone to go near the Gorge. The sign says exposure to asbestos dust can cause cancer. Its a beautiful spot.
